En el libro “Rednecks negros y progres blancos”, Thomas Sowell nos recuerda que lo que se interpreta a menudo como cultura urbana negra tiene sorprendentes similitudes con la cultura cracker del viejo Sur. Esta cultura cracker surgió en el sur americano a través de la llegada de inmigrantes ingleses muy poco cultos. En la era pre Guerra Civil americana, alrededor del 90% de los negros americanos estaban inmersos en esta expresión de la vida sureña. Cuando los negros emigraron a grandes ciudades norteñas, a principios del siglo XX, Sowell sostiene que se llevaron consigo la cultura redneck.
